Unearth Paso Robles Wine

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

We are thrilled to announce that July is Paso Robles Wine Month, and we encourage all our supplier partners to unearth Paso Robles Wine and celebrate the amazing wine growing region and the fantastic wines produced there. Located on California's Central Coast, Paso Robles has long been known as one of the premier wine regions in the United States. With a Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, the region is home to over 40 different grape varieties and more than 200 wineries.

During Paso Robles Wine Month, we want to raise awareness of this incredible wine growing region and showcase the exceptional wines that are produced there. We believe that there is no better way to do this than by encouraging our supplier partners to get involved and help spread the word about Paso Robles.

But Paso Robles doesn't just produce exceptional wine; it's also a place where remarkable initiatives thrive. One such endeavor that deserves recognition is The Juan Nevarez Memorial Scholarship by Must! Charities. This extraordinary program is committed to nurturing the next generation of vineyard and winery workers' children through multi-year investments in higher education. By focusing on academic excellence, financial need and community involvement, the scholarship empowers students and their families to realize their aspirations of obtaining a successful graduation and pursuing fulfilling professional careers. To support this noble cause, a portion of every case of participating Paso Robles brands sold will be directly donated to this fantastic charity.

A Brief History of the Paso Robles Wine Region

Paso Robles has a rich history of grape growing dating back to the late 1700s. The Franciscan Missionaries planted the first grape vines in the area in 1797, which were used to make sacramental wines for church services and Mission consumption. After the secularization of the California Missions in the 1830s, the land associated with Mission San Miguel Archangel became the Rancho Paso de Robles Mexican land grant and later the town El Paso de Robles. The Mission's vineyards were abandoned until the late 1800s, when they were absorbed into the area's first commercial vineyard, Rancho Sausalito. By the 1850s, the area later known as The Estrella District was known for producing quality wine grapes. In the 1880s, Zinfandel, Petite Syrah and Muscat vines were imported from Europe, which are still part of the area's thriving vineyard heritage to this day. Andrew Jackson York, an Indiana farmer, established one of the Central Coast's first bonded wineries nearby in 1882, which was later known as York Mountain Winery and ran continuously until the late 1990s.

However, in 1973, their world was shattered. The Lebanese civil war erupted, and a missile struck their

family home, causing devastation and injuries. It took two years of resilience and rebuilding for the

family to recover. But as the war escalated in 1975, Joseph and Marie made a courageous decision for the sake of their children's future. They left everything behind and moved to France, seeking peace and hope.

Their future turned out to be bright, and they earned it with unwavering determination. In 1998, Georges and Daniel sold their company, DAOU Systems, after taking it public. Daniel had been making wine in his garage in rural San Diego for years, tending to a small vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon and immersing himself in winemaking literature. The calling to become a winemaker was undeniable, and he knew the time had come to start a winery.

Despite the doubts and skeptics, Daniel shared his vision with Georges and their father. He said, "I'm going to buy this property in Paso, and I want to become a winemaker.
